People who grind their teeth can sometimes develop a serious problem with their jaw, which left untreated can adversely affect the teeth, gums and bone structures of the mouth.

One of the most common jaw problems is related to a disorder with the temporomandibular joint. This joint connects your lower jaw to your skull, and allows your upper and lower jaw to open and close to facilitate chewing and speaking.

People with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) often have a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing their mouths. Such disorders are often accompanied by frequent headaches, neck aches, and in some cases, tooth sensitivity.

Jaw muscles can forcefully contract at night while you sleep due to clenching. This clenching or even grinding occurs during sleep due to an uneven bite that most people are not even aware they have. Your bite may feel balanced, but this is due to the jaw muscles compensating during your awake hours for the imbalance, causing you to feel your bite is ok. It is at night while you are asleep that your jaw muscles are no longer compensating for the imbalance. That is what triggers your muscles to contract very forcefully, thus putting extreme pressure on the jaw joint(TMJ).

This is a condition that can be treated, but only by dentists that have undergone extensive advanced training in this area.
